179 Pictures is owned and operated by Ty Morin. The studio specializes in tintype photography, a process which dates back to the 1850’s. It was the primary photographic process used during the civil war. Ty has brought the process (and his darkroom) to the Collinsville Axe Factory, where the studio currently resides.
Ty attended the University of Hartford for physical therapy. During his senior year, when most of his science credits were fulfilled, he took a photography elective at the Hartford Art School. He quickly realized photography was the path he was going to pursue after college.
Ty has worked on many photography and documentary film projects. His documentary, Friend Request: Accepted, which is still in production, has garnered attention from BBC World News, NBC’s Today Show, and Good Morning America. Ty was also the Director of Photography on The Carousel, which premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.
